Calistoga Massage Therapy FAQs

Calistoga Massage Therapy

Questions & Answers

For your first massage we ask that you come to the office 10 minutes early to fill out a brief questionnaire based on your history and health. The therapist will then take you to your private room where you can disrobe to your comfort level (once the therapist leaves the room), lie face down under a clean sheet, then relax to music and reduced lighting. The therapist will knock before re-entering.

After the therapist returns, you will be asked if you have injuries or limitations that could hinder your massage and how you would like your massage time spent.

With this information, the therapist will specialize your massage for your therapeutic needs. After the massage, the therapist will use warm towels on your feet. Once you are dressed, payment is at the front desk where we take cash, checks or credit cards.

What is the most common area treated?

The area of the body that most individuals request work on is neck, upper back and shoulders. This is probably due to the stresses of our modern lives. The low and mid back muscle area is also very common.

Don’t your hands get tired?

Like any other work, your body does get tired, but the training we've received emphasizes the use of forearms and elbows, which takes the work load off our hands.

How do you know what type of massage is going to be best for you?

For most individuals, we suggest that you start with our Swedish-Calistoga massage. This massage is a fairly firm massage that will work out and stretch tight, sore muscles, leaving you refreshed and relaxed.

What massage technique do you use to relax extremely tight muscles?

This depends on the individual. Some individuals feel that long flowing strokes are best. Others feel that a very firm massage and sometimes deep tissue gives the best results, especially the following day.

What techniques will you use to encourage me to relax and help me relieve stress?

First we make sure that you are comfortable on the table with pillow support on your legs, face cradle adjusted and a blanket for your comfort. We then ask for feedback on how you like your massage.

Do you massage the head?

We do scalp massage and facial massage as part of our Swedish massage. Most individuals prefer that their massage time be spent doing a full body massage. Extra time can be given to the head and neck at the client’s request.

What benefits can I expect from a massage from you?

Generally speaking, massage will loosen tight muscles, reduce stress, increase flexibility, improve circulation, increase sense of well being, help with dry skin, and promote overall relaxation.

I have a lot of stress and body pain, what other types of treatments might you suggest?

Dr. Ticen can offer additional suggestions and care. Dr. Ticen does: Chiropractic adjusting, vibration massage, traction, acupressure, cold laser, allergy testing, diet and weight loss supervision and muscle testing.

Am I supposed to take my underwear off when I get a massage?

Most people do, but you can undress to your comfort level.  Keep in mind that you will be fully covered with a sheet at all times and the underwear may very slightly interfere with the massage.

Should I talk to the massage therapist during the massage?

This is your time and we encourage you to give feedback on the massage. Other than that, we encourage individuals to remain quiet and concentrate on relaxing and enjoying the massage experience.

The pressure isn't deep enough, but I don't want to insult the massage therapist's technique. What should I do?

The therapists are happy to use different techniques for a firmer massage.

I'd rather see a male (or female) massage therapist specifically. Can I request this?

Sure. Just be sure to include that request when you book your appointment and we’ll accommodate.

I have been receiving massages from the wonderful therapists at Calistoga Massage Therapy for over 3 years. The prices are very reasonable and I appreciate that even when I receive a massage from a different therapist, the quality of the massage remains the same. I highly recommend their services to anyone.
